Prehistoric Lemnos with at least three major settlements -Poliochni, Myrina and Koukonisi- as well as numerous sites with building remains, like that of Mikro Kastelli, Vriokastro, Progomylos, Agariones, Axia, Kaspaka, etc. held an important place in the culture of the North Aegean.

increased markedly thanks to their function as votive offerings in holy places. One of these places was the Heraion (sanctuary to the goddess Hera) of Samos.
In the citadel of Amasra there are two Byzantine churches converted into mosques a long time ago. Inside the smaller of them, some old ship graffiti survived
on the plaster of the surface of the wall.
On-going research concerning the rock-cut site at Myrina Kastro follows a number of directions and focuses on topics which may have partly been perceived, but still need to be pursued and better understood.
