Περιγραφή: The historical book Lemnos-Gallipoli 1915: Women in War, written by Alice McConnell and edited by Professor Bruce Scates of Monash University, tells of the courage, fortitude and determination shown by so many women whose lives were changed forever by the Gallipoli Campaign/Battle of Çanakkale in 1915 on both sides of the conflict.
100 years on, this book explores the important work undertaken on both the Ottoman and Australian home fronts as volunteer workforces emerged. It examines the heavy emotional burdens carried by women as they waited for news of their men. It charts how the community of Lemnos changed when the repercussions of war shook their island and it follows the rich accounts of the brave women who left their homes far behind to nurse the casualties of the campaign.
Women the world over experienced personal tragedy and hardship. Some, whilst saddened by war, found the adventure exhilarating. Some women’s experiences were remarkably similar. Regardless of nationality, women waited, worked, worried and grieved.
The book is being translated into the Turkish and Greek languages and will be distributed for free to schools, public libraries and community centres in the participating countries.
